Gorbachov - The music Video

I did this video for a Russian Metal Band called ANJ. It is pretty crazy. When I saw the lyrics it seemed to be an earnest tribute to Mikael Gorbachov (that’s how the Russians spell it), so I was a bit confounded about what the video concept should be, but then I had a brainstorm to take it way over the top and I think it was just the thing. Suffice to say it’s half Russian History allegory as told through an old zombie movie made in the Soviet Union, and half animated Soviet Propaganda posters. It’s in HD, so let it load a bit before you play it and then click the little “four arrows” symbol on the lower right part of the viewer to see it in true HD. BTW- the band has asked that I include their myspace address: myspace.com/anjkill

The Evolution of Movie Credits

Movies have come a long way since the 1930’s.

the lord of the rings credits
Even though the closing credits for Lord of The Rings is long, according to Wikipedia the 1956 version of Around the World in 80 Days and Clerks 2 had even longer closing credits. In the case of Around the World in 80 Days, it’s closing credits featured an animated recap of the movie’s three-hour storyline, identifying the actors in the order in which they appeared.

Sex and the City Film Review

Ballyhooed HBO Series Brought to Screen as a Bloated Blabfest Strictly for Loyal Fan Base

Since I was never swept up into any of the hysteria surrounding Sex and the City during its six-season run on HBO, this big screen adaptation had to serve as my introduction to the adult-oriented sitcom. As someone only casually familiar with the franchise, I anticipated seeing a sophisticated romantic romp revolving around four best friends who candidly confide in each other about the state of their love relationships.

But what I found instead was a bloated blabfest featuring a few of the most shallow, middle-aged females imaginable, immature material girls commenting about men, money, baubles and designer clothes in a flip and superficially manner. When not celebrating conspicuous consumption and the acquisition of status symbols, the film resorts to the sort of comic relief one would ordinarily associate with a typical raunchy teensploit: fart sound effects, poop and pubic hair jokes, a running-gag about a pet in heat, and the current romantic comedy rage, the gratuitous unveiling of male genitalia (ala Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Harold & Kumar 2, et al)

While this much-ballyhooed film version failed to measure up to my expectations, that doesnt necessarily mean that the TV series devoted fans are likely to be as disappointed. Afterall, the picture is essentially an extended episode reuniting the original cast members and placing their characters in plausible predicaments based on their personalities and the passage of time since the show went on hiatus.

Once we get past the opening credits, the NYC-situated saga proceeds to embroil each of the leading ladies in a personal emotional drama. The primary plotline finds narrator Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and John James Preston, aka Mr. Big (Chris Noth) finally agreeing to marry after having dated off and on for ten years. She then calls gal pal Samantha (Kim Catrall) to share her big decision, when the lamebrained bimbo guesses, You finally got Botox.

We subsequently learn that sexaholic Samantha, the most promiscuous of the clique, has settled down in L.A. with her neglectful boy-toy, Smith (Jason Lewis), a waiter-turned-Hollywood actor. Her crisis arrives when she finds herself attracted to Dante (Gilles Marini), a tall, dark and handsome hunk next-door with an equally-overactive libido. Will substituting food stifle the carnality she craves, or will that simply pack on poundage?

Meanwhile, back in the Big Apple, Miranda (Cynthia Hobbes), a career-oriented attorney with a five year-old son (Joseph Pupo), has been too busy to notice that she and her husband, Steve (David Eigenberg), havent slept together in six months. After he makes an admission of infidelity, she is forced to wrestle with whether she wants to work on or simply abandon the marriage.

“The Shock Doctrine” - Short Film

A Film by Alfonso Cuarón and Naomi Klein, directed by Jonás Cuarón.

“When I finished The Shock Doctrine, I sent it to Alfonso Cuarón because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists — including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited — to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated.” - Naomi Klein

DIRECTED BY JONÁS CUARÓN. Alfonso Cuarón, director of “Children of Men”, and Naomi Klein, author of “No Logo”, present a short film from Klein’s book “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” http://www.shockdoctrine.com

Two New I Am Legend Movie Trailers

I Am Legend - Trailer
Two new I Am Legend movie trailers are now online. First up is an international trailer. The new look is less mysterious, and more forthcoming. I liked it a little better the other way when less was more

The official domesticc trailer makes I Am Legend look a lot more like a kick ass sci-fi movie. I prefer the new US trailer, and I think you might as well. It’s more action packed and sharply edited to Clint Mansell’s awesome score from The Fountain. I’m probably more excited for this film, than any movie coming out in the rest of 2007 (that I haven’t yet seen).

Check out the new trailers below.

Mel Blanc, the man of a thousand voices

Mel Blanc - omul cu o mie de voci

The most famous voice talent in cartoon history, Mel Blanc was the Looney Tunes star who voiced Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and dozens of others. Blanc grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he worked in radio from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, when he headed to Hollywood. He landed voice work with Walter Lantz and Walt Disney, but it was his long (and eventually exclusive) relationship with Warner Brothers’ Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes that brought Blanc fame. He worked for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1937 to 1969 and helped shape the characters that would become world famous: Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester & Tweety, Pepe LePew, Wile E. Coyote, Speedy Gonzalez, Yosemite Sam and others. While voicing cartoons he also worked in radio, most memorably with Judy Canova and Jack Benny (Blanc did the comic sounds of Maxwell, Benny’s sputtering jalopy). After Warner Brothers shut down their animation department Blanc did voice work for films and commercials (the Frito Bandito), and enjoyed his position as the most famous cartoon voice in the world.

Extra credit: Blanc is also credited with creating the character voices for Woody Woodpecker and Barney Rubble (Fred Flintstone’s sidekick and neighbor).
This awesome 1981 video of Mel Blanc invited on Lettermans’ Show speaks for itself

Newt & Vasques in 2007

Yesterday I went to buy drain-o and dog food and ended up with the Alien Quadrilogy instead, whoops. I also had a date later that evening, whoops. Yeah instead I sat down with an 12 pack and watched Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 right in a row and realized that the middle one, Aliens, not Alien 3, is the weak one. I haven’t seen these movies for a long time, I was a kid when I saw them, this is what I remember. Alien was boring, Aliens was awesome, and Alien 3 was weird.
But whoops, look what i found searching on the net. Do you remeber that little girl who was screaming “Ripleey..Ripley…” handing a head of some doll in her hands all the time? Her name was Newt. Or, do you remeber Pvt. Vasquez?
Here they are now in 2007.
Jenette Goldstein - Pvt. Vasquez
Carrie Henn - Rebecca ‘Newt’ Jorden

I didn’t mention Alien 4 because I’ve never seen it, I plan on watching it tonight after watching Alien 3 Special Edition, I’ll probably write something about it later I don’t know.

Good night everybody! ;)

Bruce Lee’s Screen Test For The Green Hornet

Even after 30 years Bruce is still hands down the fastest martial artist I have ever seen. Just the way the guy moves, the way he composes himself and how it’s captured still surprises me to this day. It’s truly sad he’s gone, I think this world today could really benefit from his presence. Could you all imagine how this world would be if he was still around? I believe his presence and philosophies would greatly impact many people. Just see how much he impacts people now and he isn’t even alive.

In this old footage you will se some classic awesomeness from the best martial artist of all time, Bruce Lee. This is Bruce’s screen test (in full) for his role in The Green Hornet. Needless to say, he more than qualified for the role (and got a chance to scare the crap out of a dumpy old white guy in the process). Enjoy!
