This is Setinil – Spain

This village is built in a valley, and many of the houses are built into the cliff, so the back of the house is solid rock.  The houses are whitewashed.

But…..

    but what? If it’s not a seismically active area, what’s the problem? The mountainside is good insulation, too, so they probably need little heat and no cooling.

    There’s no problem. They said the houses are whitewashed BUT…and then showed you pictures of how rocks form part of the houses…which are left natural. Get it? So, the “but” in this case is alluding to a good thing.
